Genetics and Steroids

Genetics and Steroids Do You Have What it Takes?

Over the last several years, I have seen many articles circulating around on some of the more popular online bodybuilding publications, a lot of them revolve around the use of steroids.

In the bodybuilding world, it is no secret that bodybuilders use steroids, and usually, if you see an overly big muscular guy in your gym he is most likely using steroids.

Some say genetics do not play a role in developing your physique but they do.

How many pro bodybuilders develop their upper body but can't seem to develop their legs.

You also have the guys with huge legs that can never seem to fully develop the upper body, unfortunately, most of the issue is due to genetics.

Branch Warren Leg Press

In my prime, “early 20's I had 21-inch arms I had huge triceps, but no matter how much I trained my biceps I struggled to grow them.

Arnold Scwarzenneger had a phenomenal physique, yet he did not have huge triceps, they were well developed but not huge, what made his arms look big where his bulging biceps.

My point is that genetics play a major role on how you develop your body, steroids or not.

Now that we know that genetics play a big role on what you can possibly gain by lifting, this does not mean that you can't gain muscle and develop an incredible physique, you may just have to train harder than the other guy.

We all know that anabolic steroids work, there have been many studies done, and even those who don't work out will gain muscle simply by taking steroids, which is kind of pointless.

Anabolic steroids can definitely help anyone gain muscle in a short period of time, steroids like Dbol and testosterone can help increase muscle and strength, and without a doubt, you will grow, the question is what is your reason for taking them.

If you are doing it just to get big,  that is kind of senseless, reason being is that once you quit taking them you are going to shrink back down to your original size.

This causes certain psychologically problems with many guys which is one of the reasons many will not stop taking them.

Side effects of anabolic steroids

Many bodybuilders will tell you there are little or no side effects to anabolic steroids, this is kind of like a nuclear engineer saying there is no risk working in a nuclear facility.

Sure many bodybuilders and nuclear engineers live a long life, yet there are some that die at a young age.

The side effects from anabolic steroids can be mild to severe and even cause death, let's take a look at some of the side effects of steroids.

Mild side effects from steroid

  • Severe acne and oily skin
  • Hair loss
  • Low sperm count
  • Irritability, aggression, and depression
  • Increase in cholesterol levels
  • Gynecomastia
  • Shrinking testicles
  • Infertility
  • Excess facial or body hair, a deeper voice in women

Severe side effects from steroids

  • Stunted growth in teens
  • Kidney disease or failure
  • Risk of heart attacks blood clots and stroke
  • High blood pressure
  • Liver disease including cysts and tumors
  • Menstrual irregularities in women
  • Death

The last side effect (death) is real, if you don't believe me, there is an interesting article on Big Dead Bodybuilders and those who have succumbed from steroid use.

If you really want to do steroids and get bigger, that's fine. There is actually a term for this called Bigorexia or Muscle Dysmorphic Disorder (MDD) but is getting massive really worth the risk.

I guess if I was a professional bodybuilder I would probably do what it takes to compete, however,  most of us are not in that league but we can transform or body. Problem is, it will take longer, but imagine the rewards knowing you did it without steroids.

Proper diet and training makes things easier

You don't necessarily have to take anabolic steroids to get big

I have seen many young men build incredible physiques by eating plenty of the right foods and taking the right supplements.

If you train hard and incorporate a lot of high-quality foods, grains, and vegetables in your diet you can gain muscle.

If you would like to speed up the process there are supplements also called legal steroids which can help you increase muscle.

Lifting heavy will make your muscles grow

That's right, Ronnie Coleman was a beast, not only was he strong he always lifted heavy, the more weight you push around the more you will shock your muscles into growing, it just takes consistency and time.

Conclusion

Not everyone has the right genetics for bodybuilding.

One of my favorite quotes is from Vince Gironda, he said.

Champions are born, NOT made.

What he said was very true, not everyone has the right genetics for bodybuilding, just like some people will not make good basketball players.

Should you take steroids?

This is an individual choice everyone has to make for themselves if you are not going to compete why bother.

If it is a great physique you want you can achieve it by eating right, training hard and being consistent.
